Brett Favre Less than Spectacular in his Debut

Matt CassellIt was apparent the Brett Favre was feeling the pressure in his first game of his 19th NFL season as he was only able to complete one pass in his limited playtime. The Minnesota Vikings were still able to hold off the Kansas City Chiefs for a 17-13 win, with thanks going to some pretty poor play by newly acquired Chiefs QB Matt Cassell.

Neither Favre nor Cassell were able to get much going during their starts as it was a pretty sloppy game overall. The great news for Favre and the Vikings was that he felt no pain in his shoulder and made it through the night without any major mistakes, which is much better than his last few games last year. His passes definitely had the same pop that fans are used to but he didn’t seem to have his timing or sense of direction down quite yet.

Backup QB Tarvaris Jackson came through with a pretty impressive performance and threw a polished 12 for 15 for 202 yards with 2 touchdowns on the night. Jackson came into the game after Favre was manhandled by linebacker Corey Mays so head coach Brad Childress took him out just to be safe even though Favre got up and walked off the field just fine.

It is still quite a strange sight to see Favre wearing the purple colors of the Vikings after so many years as a Green Bay Packer, but it is a sight we are all going to have to get used. One thing is for sure, it will be more than exciting to see Favre head to Lambeau field in November as the cheese heads are sure to be less than inviting for the former city favorite.
