Favre says No to Minnesota for Now

Brett FavreOn an update from yesterday, Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress met with "retired" QB Brett Favre, but only over the phone. The two had played a face to face meeting for late this week but Favre called Childress last minute and told him that he was definitely still retired, for now. On top of this Favre's agent reiterated that Favre had made no decision to change his mind or to start discussing playing again next season.

While the agent clearly states that Favre has not decided to come back and play, he has let it be known that there is still room for him to change his mind. We all know that he has changed his mind before, so the opportunity will always seem to be present. There were a number of reports that stated that Childress would travel south to meet Favre but the reports came with a lot of media scrutiny. Maybe it was that media reaction that forced the all star QB to cancel the meeting and change his mind for now.

So now the question becomes whether or not the Vikings do or will ever have a shot at signing the 39 year old future hall of famer. The team has a roster that is set and ready for the super bowl besides the glaring hole at the QB position. The addition of Favre could make the team an early season super bowl favorite but without him, experts are unsure of how far the team can go with Tarvaris Jackson.

This isn’t to say that the team had planned on signing Favre all off season. There hasn’t necessarily been a change in the teams plans and they were prepared to start the season with Jackson from the get go. Many on team feel that they still have the confidence and ability to go a long way deep into the playoffs. A lot of the players on the roster are looking at it the right way. If they sign Favre, excellent. If not, there is nothing lost.

It just does not seem to truly be the NFL off season unless some controversy surrounds Brett Favre and his choice to retire or not. In February Favre made the expected decision that he was done for good after his body and mind wore down near the end of last season. We all know that Favre's life revolves around the game and it can sometimes be impossible to stay away from something you love so much. One thing is for sure, if the Vikings did sign Favre the team could be looking at a very successful season.
