Jason Campbell's Last Year to Prove his Worth

Mark SanchezThe hopes of the Washington Redskins have been placed on the shoulders of Jason Campbell for quite some time now. Many people feel that he has all the tools to be an elite quarterback but he has been unable to get used to the offensive schemes of the team or take lead of the team. He has built a relationship with the community and wants to remain in Washington for his entire career. However, as he enters his last year on his contract there are many that feel that the team could go into a different direction unless Campbell steps up this year. He has had four seasons to prove himself and simply hasn’t.

Campbell is upset as he feels that the team was constantly trying to move Campbell during the off season and were on top of the list for trying to acquire Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos. After they could not acquire Cutler the team made a number of trade talks with Tampa Bay and even discussed trading up in the draft in order to land rookie Mark Sanchez. It is clear to Campbell that he is somewhat unwanted coming into this season and knows that he has to prove everyone wrong and make them regret trying to ship him out before the season started. Campbell is convinced that he has the ability to be a franchise quarterback, he just needs to prove it to everyone else.

Coach Vinny Cerrato is very open about saying that Campbell has not proven himself yet. Campbell has been unable to pull through with consistency all season, as noted by the coach. The QB played well through the first 8 games of last year but was unable to keep it together for the rest of the season. What could be different for Campbell this year is the fact that the offense will have the same look as last year. In each of the previous years he has had to adjust to a whole new look and a whole new scheme. This time around he already knows the plan and is comfortable with what is going to be put into action this year.

In each of the lat eight years, Campbell has played under a different coach and a different offense. He has only played one full season, and that was last year. And many people should keep in mind that every year his passing yards, touchdowns, completions, completion percentage and passer rating have all increased, and he is only 27. Last season he even set a Redskins record after completing 252 passes with one single interception. However after that hot start the team fell apart, but all the blame cannot go onto the shoulders of the 27 year old QB. At that time he had to face some of the toughest defenses in the league including Dallas, Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. This year he will have to face most of the same teams but hopefully him and the team will have learnt from last year and be able to utilize some new strategies in order to take the step to the next level. If not, there is a good chance Campbell will not be resigned at the end of the season.
