The New York Giants have been one of the elite teams in the NFC for quite some time now. However after dominated the league for most of the regular season last year, the team was dispatched from the playoffs rather early. The defense was there all season long but the Giants seemed to have lost the explosive ability on the offensive side of the ball and most of that is due to the loss of Plaxico Burress after his legal situation. Burnress shot himself in the leg in a nightclub and has not played since and was released by the team this off season.
While the Giants already had a good team entering the off season, they were disappointed with their effort in the playoffs last year so they refused to sit by and not try to improve. While the defense was one of the best in the league they made some moves to make it even better by adding four veteran players. The team signed Michael Boley, Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard and C.C Brown. These moves gave the team some extra depth on the defensive side of the ball and allow the coaching team to put together some extra variations on the defensive side of the ball.
Canty and Bernard will join an already very deep defensive line unit that features perennial all stars like Jason Tuck and Umenyiora. Mixed in nicely with adaptable pass rusher Mathias Kiwanuka the team has one of the best defensive lines in all of football and will be able to constantly put the opposing team's quarterback under pressure. With the ability to match so many players up at different positions the team will be able to throw a whole host of different looks at NFC teams.
Michael Boley has the ability to be a difference maker in games with an unprecedented package of speed and athletic ability. He will be used in aggressive situations and could emerge as a surprise all star this season.
As if the team had not already improved their defense enough they added promising linebacker Clint Sintim to the team. Sintim will give the Giants yet another look to rush the passer with and opposing teams will have to put together some excellent schemes to stop this defense.
With the defensive side of the ball firmed up, the team used the rest of the draft to acquire some promising young wide receivers. The Giants needed to replace the loss of Plaxico Burress and tried to do so by drafting and signing Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden. Neither player is as explosive as Burress but they both have the ability to get open and be deep threats for QB Eli Manning.
A lot of experts feel that the Giants still need some help on the offensive side of the ball, but the fact is that it may be impossible for opposing teams to score. If one or a few players can step up and be offensive playmakers then the team could once again dominate the NFC and make another run to the Super Bowl in 2009. Points will be hard to come by against the Giants and if they can find a way to put up 15 points a game, they should be able to walk to the top of the NFC.
