New York Jets Name Mark Sanchez Starting QB for 2009 Season

Rex RyanIt seems that the future is now for the New York Jets as they are turning over a new leaf and moving from old to young. After being lead by veteran QB Brett Favre last year, they have now named rookie Mark Sanchez as the starting QB. Coach Rex Ryan made the decision this past Wednesday which means that Sanchez is the only rookie that has been named as a starter for the year.

The move has to come as a disappointment for Kellen Clemens who was pushed aside by Favre last year and will now be relegated to the bench again. Sanchez only spoke of how excited he was to start in the league and how much he is preparing for the responsibility that comes with being a QB in the NFL. His first game at the helm will come on September 13th as the Jets head to Houston to play the Texans.

New York’s next game will come on Saturday against the New York Giants and it will be interesting to see how many snaps Sanchez gets and how he can perform in his last real test before the full season. Jets fans and Ryan both feel that Sanchez will give them the best chance to win even though there may be a pretty harsh learning curve trying to deal with some of the best defenses in the league.

If Sanchez does stumble out of the gate in the first few games then there is no reason why the Jets would not go back to Clemens who did look impressive in his last pre season game. He would be more than willing to prove that he has what it takes to lead the team after sitting in the background for so many seasons.
