In 2007 season it seemed that Ronnie Brown was ready to break out, and break out big time. He was leading the Miami Dolphins and was the best running back in the league, statistically, by far. At that time early in the season, Brown was averaging over 5 years every carry and added onto 39 catches he had an incredible 1,170 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns. That was until he tore his ACL against the New England Patriots in the 8th week of the season. Many experts feel that Brown would have shattered the old record of 2.429 yards from scrimmage in a single season set by Marshall Faulk. A season like that would have vaulted him into the same category as fantasy stars LaDainian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson.
After the injury though Brown had been deemed as a risky pick in fantasy football and a guy that might not always be consistent and last year he proved everyone right. He was really good from time to time, but was inconsistent. At the end of the season he had managed to compile 1,170 scrimmage yards, 11 touchdowns and 33 receptions. The number show even more inconsistency when you look at them more in depth as Brown scored four of those touchdowns all in one game and was unable to run for more than 100 yards after week 5.
However the good news for the season was that he was able to contribute, and contribute quickly after his serious injury in 2008. That is promising for his 2009 season, even though he will be sharing carries with Ricky Williams. If he can stay healthy he should still be in line for over 250 carries over the course of 16 games. New offensive coordinator Dan Henning loves to run the ball, and therefore Brown will have a legitimate shot at rushing for over 1,000 yards this year.
Another reason to think that Brown may have a breakout year is the fact that he only has one year left on his current deal. He has a lot on the line and a breakout year with superstar stats could set him a big pay day in the off season. In terms of fantasy football you are probably going to see Brown get drafted in the second round of drafts this year, and that may even end up being a steal if he really turns the career when it comes to his progress.
Whether you are entering into a serious fantasy football league or are just a big time football fan, you definitely are going to want to have your eye on Ronnie Brown this season. Everything seems to be aligned for him to have a major breakout season and it could even prove to be one of the best years for a running back all time. He has the ability and the opportunity to get a lot of touches and may be able to once again push for the all time record for yards from scrimmage, if all goes well.
