The Baltimore Ravens have locked up one of the premier pass rushers in the entire league for the next 6 years. The Ravens have signed linebacker Terrell Suggs to a 6 year contract reportedly worth over $63 million. On top of that already guaranteed money Suggs is expected to receive close to $33 million in signing bonuses and an option. The deal is a record setter and is the most that has ever been given to a defensive player in NFL history.
Suggs was a first round pick in the 2003 NFL entry draft and is coming off a very impressive season last year. He led the team with 8 sacks and managed to compile 68 tackles over the course of 16 games. In his first season in the league Suggs managed to win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award, ran two interceptions all the way back for touchdowns and even earned a Pro Bowl berth. It didn’t stop there as he has improved with every passing season and has now cashed out on his ability. While Ray Lewis gets most of the attention from fans, Suggs is an integral part of the Ravens stifling defense.
The Ravens have been an organization to look up to. While many teams lose their superstar players to free agency the Ravens have always managed to keep their best players around such as Ed Reed, Todd Heap and Jonathon Ogden. Securing Suggs has allowed the team to continue with that tradition and remain a favorite to compete deep into the playoffs every single year in the NFL.
At the moment Suggs is ranked second in franchise history on the all time sack list. He currently has 53 sacks and trails Peter Boulware who holds the record with 70. There is no reason to think that Suggs cannot take over that record over the next 6 years. One thing is for sure, the Ravens will continue to be an exciting team and will be fun to watch for years to come for a number of NFL fans.
