There is a lot of optimism surrounding the Chicago Bears training camp this year and for good reason. The off season acquisition of QB Jay Cutlet has lit a fire under the fan base and the team and has many hoping for a big season from the team. However many people outside of Chicago are really doubting the core group of receivers that the team has and wonder if Cutler will bring enough change to truly make the offense gel and become a threat to opposing defenses. The team and its players have constantly stated that they like what they have at the position, but the truth is that there isn’t one real threat at the wide receiver position.
The team is quietly lurking around to find another capable receiver to open up the field but there really are slim pickings out there on the open market. There has been talk of Anquan Boldin but he is far too expensive for the team to fit into their places. Well then many fans bring up Matt Jones and Plaxico Burress but neither of those fit into the offensive game plan at all. The only real affordable options may be Marvin Harrison and Amani Toomer but both are far past their prime and the Bears have always leaned towards younger players at the position. So all the Bears can do for now is wait and see if someone else becomes available are start to really trust in the team that they have already put together which includes;
Devin Armoashodu. He is coming into his third year in the league after spending two years with the Indianapolis Colts. Last yeah he caught seven balls for a total of less than 100 years but the Bears are hoping that he can break out and be come a major cog in the team’s plans.
John Broussard. Broussard made quite an impact in his rookie year with Jacksonville but was later released the following year. Since then he really hasn’t found a team he fits in well with and is hoping he can settle in with the Bears and Cutler.
Devin Hester. Hester is coming into his fourth season and is going to be relied upon to become more than just a dominant return man. He has yet to solidify himself as a threat at the receiver position but has the hands and the speed to make it happen. Out of all the Bears receivers, Hester is the only one that really strikes fear into opposing teams. Cutler’s rocket arm may allow Hester to break free and get deep more often this season than ever.
Rashied Davis. Davis is the veteran of the group and was a big part of the Chicago Bears run to Super Bowl XLI. Since then he has been asked to be the top receiver and has been essentially shut down. However he is a very hard worker and has been very dedicated this off season so he should be able to bounce back.
