Will Michael Vick get his Second Chance?

Peyton ManningIt appears the Michael Vick is ready to try and get his second chance when it comes to his NFL playing career. The Atlanta Falcons feel that Vick has been through enough already, has shown remorse and deserves his second chance. However, that chance is not going to come in Atlanta as the team has already moved on without him thanks to the emergence of QB Matt Ryan. The team has made it abundantly clear that Vick will not have a chance to come back to Atlanta and the question remains whether any NFL team will be interested in his services anymore. A number of NFL owners agree with Atlanta's stance on the situation. While many feel Vick deserves another shot, none seem willing to be the team to give him the opportunity.

Vick only has two months left to prove that he is capable or worthy of playing as a starting quarterback in the league, but the problem is that many teams are already set and willing to head into the season with what they have. Take the Indianapolis Colts for example, sure they have Peyton Manning but the team has needed another backup quarterback just in case for some time. They said they are much more comfortable having Jim Sorgi as their backup heading into the 2009 season. That is a clear cut sign about the market for Vick. If a team really feels more comfortable having Sorgi than Vick, is there any interest for the former all star at all?

There are a few owners that do believe some desperate team will sign Vick eventually. But when that time will come around is a muddied question. First things first, the former QB will have to be reinstated to in the NFL since he was suspended in 2007. A few people feel that once Vick was reinstated there would be a number of teams that would sign him, albeit to a very small, short term and incentive laden contract. The real problem comes with Vick's history. Owners would have to very confident in signing him, because it could mean big trouble for endorsement and sponsorship deals. A lot of major companies will be scared off from sponsoring a team that is lead by a former criminal and a man that admitted to heinous and violent acts against dogs.

The Falcons know all to well about the sponsorship hits that can arise after the team lost a ton of money after the Vick incident. Fans stopped buying season tickets and no one was buying Falcons merchandise for a long time after. The team has fought back since thanks to the new players that has emerged, but it shows the trouble with signing Vick.

A new team is really going to have to convince themselves that Vick is a changed man, and not just when it comes to football. Vick is going to have to really involve himself in the community and become a true community hero. He has to be more than a player on the field and continue to work with the Humane Society to atone for his actions. He has already spoken with the Humane Society about continuing his 40 hours of service per week, and that is a good start.

It remains to be seen what will happen with Vick but if he can show true remorse and work within the community, there have to be some teams that are willing to take a chance on the incredible talent that is Michael Vick.
